Dogs and wolves are distinct species.
All species within the genus canis are phylogenetically closely related with 78 chromosomes. The majority of these species (but not all) can interbreed.
Taxonomically they are of the same genus but *distinct* species.
Do not spread misinformation.
Gray wolves: Canis lupus
Dogs: Canis lupus familiaris
So, by modern taxonomy, dogs are technically a subspecies of the gray wolf, not a separate species.
Dogs and wolves can interbreed freely.
They produce fertile offspring.
Genetically, they’re over 99.9% identical.
They are the same GENUS. They are different species.

All are very shy when it comes to man.There is the very odd exception you read in the news about.Getting attacked by one of the above is more or less like getting struck by lightning.
The thing is: wolves are highly intelligent. So if one individual has hunting success on a farm it’s very likely it will come back and maybe even bring its pack. 1/2
Adding donkeys to your herd and guard dogs prevents most of the damage.
Look what one wolf could do to a herd of sheep, kept behind a gate. Not for food of course, just for the fun of killing them. One lone wolf managed to kill 20 sheep himself. Another 20 had to be put to death because of being mortally wounded.
