you hate ralph nader for throwing the 2000 election. i hate ralph nader for burning america's state capacity to the ground to establish a universal nonprofit veto over any affirmative program, however progressive. we're different.

the modern Left decided it loved the 1970s era public interest law movement (CEQA, NEPA, etc) make than it did the 1940s New Deal and so we ended up allocating hundreds of billions to fill out book reports and pay lawyers instead of building things π

Also the vote totals establish that Nader did not cause Goreβs loss. People who claim otherwise either donβt know the numbers or they do and are dishonest
I'm also increasingly alarmed by yimbyism's inclination to condemn process* & environmental safeguards with little nuance to their benefits to our health & environment.
*Not without reason, but it's still sad.

Regardless I think there is a throughline of deregulatory thinking that makes me nervous.
I personally don't want to live in a world where the environment matters as little as yimbys seem to think it does. Plenty of reasonable people whom I respect feel otherwise.
I also don't want to live in dense housing, & it seems personally hypocritical that I'd support what I struggle to personally abide more & more
not an issue i know enough to come down on one side or the other. i feel like i can see the flaws and advantages....any recs for reading up more are most welcome!
All his big successes were with lawsuits though - I feel like the problem is that he created and proved out a public interest law firm business model, less that he thought it was the best method for change.
But yeah that quote is such a great example of how those people think broadly.
Just Nader bashing from Democrats who hate democracy, anti-corporate activists, and citizens who demand more.
I hope, come 2026 and 2028 we get dem pols who think wholesale that we shouldnt be outsourcing government capacity to unaccountable unelecteds
