when there's no functional difference in rhetoric, the solution is to look at the material reality that biden and kamala deported more people than trump. of course no one's under the illusion that things will necessarily "improve" but i've heard a lot of people say "idk, at least it's different".

Democrats trying to be “Republican lite” will always be a losing proposition. Trump’s supporters aren’t looking for an alternative, they know he lies but he 1) bows to rich people, and 2) hates women and non-whites. Dems won’t sway those voters, they need to reach the suspicious non-voters.

I can't speak for them, but my experience talking to Latinx immigrants is a strong sense of a ladder pull where their presence is valid but people a few steps behind them in trying for a better life are criminals and unwanted

I also think the Democrats have consistently defanged GOP policy threats not only practically, but in the broader consciousness because they keep chasing bipartisanship. They cite focus groups and polls where people say they want bipartisanship but they never seem to notice how the actually vote.

I think you don't need to be convicted. Ford was able to pardon Nixon without his even having been charged.

But I'm pretty sure you're right about the civil nature of immigration "crimes," and that would probably make pardons pointless.
