I had scarlet fever as a kid - we don't have a vaccine for that one, but have rendered it rare in other ways. I would really like my experience to remain one where people react by comparing me with Beth March, not their own kid.

Most of the anti-vaxxers only consider things like measles & mumps & sometimes rubella, and consider them not dangerous.
They don't think or care about wider spread nor the potential injurious or fatal impact on newborns.
They'll be even more angry if/when polio finds its way back into the US.

The rubella vaccine was very late, like the oldest Gen X kids were in real school; they only started really working on it after a mid-1960s outbreak reached the US. My mom's little sister got it and everyone had to stay home, which was like super tragic and whatnot because nobody else got sick.

I suspect my mom just doesn't remember getting it earlier but this was the only in-living-memory quarantine story in my family growing up and I guess it was exceptionally obnoxious even though someone brought them books and homework. I'm not sure how to reconcile that part with fomite transmission.

Same! Got my covid, flu, RSV yesterday. Will go back for shingles etc in a couple of weeks. I mean wth- what about tetanus vaccines? Will they do away with those too? Good luck to them if they step on a rusty nail.

My late mother grew up with 7 siblings. The oldest died at 11 from polio and the household was quarantined through and after his illness. Even with the disaster of the first rollout of the vaccine, after that, people still stood in lines with their kids. People don't know how bad it can get.

We were about to go off for a weekend with family friends who lived near a ski resort when my sister and I got chicken pox. Too bad, ski slopes!

Many of these vaccines were fairly new when I came through (I got the polio vax on a sugar cube and my younger sib got the jab - they were not pleased!). But I did have chicken pox, and I was miserable!

My dad had polio and spent 2 YEARS in the hospital from ages 5-7 and I can't imagine how much that killed my grandmother and how much she would have given for a vaccine. Luckily dad made a full recovery.

I had chickenpox, and mumps (not at the same time) as a child. Vaccines for chicken pox, measles/mumps/rubella weren’t available yet. I still, over 50 years later, remember how miserable I was when I had the mumps. And now it appears I’m at risk for shingles due to latent chickenpox virus.

I had all of these childhood illnesses as well. Sure, I was pretty sick with all of them but it was Measles that caused real damage. I’m deaf on one ear because of Measles, nerve damage so there is nothing I can do about it.

Measles and chicken pox here, not simultaneously…early/mid-1960s. My mom thought my little sister (2ish at the time) was going to die from measles. My mid-Millennial daughter just missed the pox vax approval, had the illness a few months before.

I had shingles (for which there is a vaccine approved for older folks like me). My shingles caused post-herpetic neuralgia - basically, a pain that can persist for months, years, or life. Mine is a relatively mild case, but some people get it so bad they commit suicide. Get the shingles vaccination!

I had red measles, and I was very sick with a high fever for two weeks. Later I got the mumps and chickenpox. Thankfully my children were vaccinated and didn’t get anything except chicken pox before the vaccine was created. My grandchildren were spared that and don’t have the shingles germ.
