Victor Hugo wasted no time with ValJeans origin. He also went into vas detail as to why Napoleon lost the battle of Waterloo just to show how much of a piece of shit one character was. If there was interesting stuff that happened prior to the crimes he would have written about it.

There are plenty of eyerolls about this but the whole crux of things is that anything pre-getting the candesticks (or possibly even pre-stealing Petit-Javert's coin) is JUST SETUP. There's zero opportunity for any sort of emotional payoff.
