I wonder how Trill symbionts feel if their female hosts get pregnant. Do they get annoyed that they have to share their comfortable abdomen space with a baby? Are they like, hey, I was here first

Maybe just a touch. But consider that birth is fraught with difficulties from a Trill biological aspect maybe they welcome their host being with child.
I wonder how the Trill even figured out how to implant symbionts, since it's a surgical procedure. It's not like the first guy to do it gains any additional wisdom, there are no previous hosts. You're just a guy with a worm inside you. You're like RFK Jr.
i always figured there was some ancient way that trill used to join with symbionts, and the surgery is the modern, likely less awful way to do it. the difference between a natural childbirth and a cesarean section.
ooh ooh maybe there's trill who insist on doing it the old brutal way, that'd be fun
I kinda assumed the surgery came later for a ‘more efficient connection’ and it was originally either more Goa’uld style or related to some form of accidental infection/ingestion.
Then eventually they did a “by our powers and knowledge combined” and refined a host selection & surgical process.
Now there’s a Trek novel we all very much need. Or a chapter in the federation textbook of comparative biology & evolution. Which I also very much need.
Ha that's why ive just reread them. I'd say if you've just finished watching ds9 start with Twist of faith and these haunted seas and see how you feel. I liked those but then skipped to Unity this time round. Of the worlds of ds9 Bajor is great, the others feel a bit just there to close plot threads
Very different price points on those! One is the usual 2.99 on kindle, the other, paperback only and 90 quid! They should really have them all electronically…
Oh and if you're not aware of it ... A Stitch in Time by Andrew Robinson is a must read. A great novel. Tragedy loss redemption loyalty. All against the backdrop of the aftermath of the dominion war on Cardassia. The audio book is perfection.
I'm sure there's more SOMEWHERE about it we'll be *corrected* on...but I'm going with "workplace knife accident on the trill farm" resulting in a wacky "You got your chocolate in my peanut butter" situation.
Rewatching DS9 and the Trill keep being like, just not QUITE weird enough, you know? The only thing not (white, American) human-coded about Jadzia is the symbiont itself. They feel like an Earth colony world that started doing this cause…they read the script, I guess?
Learning that history was probably not easy to work into a plot but giving their culture that context of how all this kicked off, even restricted to the story bible, might have given them a little more texture.
Like how does the zhian’tara start to be a thing? How far back does it all go?
I always thought the host/symbiote control split was mostly 50/50, so hopefully the symbiote would be a consenting partner in the decision to get pregnant. Of course, they could still have some regrets about the process once it starts, like anyone with morning sickness might 😂
The way it's usually portrayed is that the host and symbiont join to create a new individual. It's not a 50/50 split because there aren't two minds in there, but it's not the same mind that either of them had before being joined
As godparent to my best friends 2year old I agree. I go over at least once a week and either help with the little ensign* or help around the house. It has been a great thing for everyone involved.
Well, I remember that episode where all of the former hosts of Dax got to live psychically inside some other people so talk to Jadzia. Quark played host to Audrid, who extolled the benefits and wonders of motherhood. Seems to me the symbiote doesn't mind much.

Trill Mom-"Young man you bring that back RIGHT NOW!"
Trill Baby-"No way! That place was a dump! I'm NEVER going back!"
*cue the chase music*
Symbiotes don't have bones.
The surgery likely happened later as a convenience.

Also my guess is that the symbionts were parasites in pre-history and they and their hosts co-evolved into this situation.
Some Trill probably took a dip in the Caves of Mak'ala and realized "oh hey, these worms have some nifty ideas."

I think all babies should have three parents. It oughta be a law.
(I'm clearly thinking like...Trill Aunties being chaos aunties from the inside)
