Those ladies are absolute legends. And fandom drama back then involved informing UK customs that someone was sending porn, so a bunch of zines were seized. (At least one person went down to the post office to politely ask for her K/S porn.)
"The Premise" (that Kirk and Spock are gay) is fucking great. It's so dorky, but at the same time Trek Fanfics had their own anti-shipping discourse that it was wrong to imply to space naval officers are gay because it could ruin somebody's career irl or something.
Can't find the specific anti-spirk fic where the rumor of a homosexual relationship ruins both kirk and spock's careers because this is the future of the 70s and it's reasonable to assume the military is always going to be homophobic even in a utopia.
Even with the occasional dumb comment I got, I did enjoy doing my Trektober two years ago 'cause I got to research about women in Star Trek fandom and learn about pioneers like this one lady who made Star Trek fan music videos in the 1970s without the help of computers for editing.
I will also say that Star Trek has provided a healthy blend of progressive ideals and naval traditions that provides my neurodivergent brain something nice to fixate on. I don’t like to brag but I can name the ship class of every enterprise since the federation was formed 😆

Legit concern back then.
People got really mad about it though.
Of course it's a very silly debate because we all know Kirk can clearly get away with anything regardless of what the federation thinks.
I'm so glad the different generations can bond over spirk
Star Trek showed us that things can be different, that we can be better, and yes it probably helped a few people discover their kinks ;)
