I taught at a high school in North Lawndale last week that locked up students' phones every morning, and it was amazing. It was my first high school teaching experience where I felt like I could have an actual dialogue with the students.

When they have downtime, I see them have meaningful conversations with each other, practice instruments, work on school stuff, chat with staff, and generally do stuff that soon-to-be adults should be doing.
NONE of this stuff happens when the students have their phones on them.
