OMG I started hating Google when they suddenly introduced login popups in order to browse (even with a browsers and search engines other than Chrome!) What benefit would that provide to me? It seems like it's a domestic level alteration to Google Maps.

If you zoom out further than Interstate highway level it reverts to Gulf of Mexico

I think the name difference would be a localization thing (varies by the country you are in)

Tried on my laptop and it’s Gulf of America no matter how far I zoom out

I’m guessing those zoomed out levels are just cached and will change eventually

I dunno. Maybe it's easier to push this update live in browser than it is in app, but if that were the case why would it have changed at all? I've got a Pixel, we get just about everything ahead of other android users.

I think Apple Maps has become much better than Google over the past few years:

Just visually nicer, cleaner transit layer, really smooth street view, more detailed 3D and street markings, safer bike directions

Google just has more up to date business information
