I had a riff about Jevon’s Paradox in my book draft but I ended up cutting it because it felt kind of obscure. Now everyone wants to talk about Jevon’s Fucking Paradox.

Anyway it applies to land use: the world needs to increase yields to make more food with less land and less deforestation, but when an individual farmer increases his yields he’s got an individual incentive to clear more forest to expand his farm and make more money.
