My husband just asked if he could feed the chickens unshelled sunflower seeds or if that was a choking hazard, and I now think he is officially the cutest thing ever.

I supplement my chickens' diet with both. Both are very important this time of year. Hens are recovering from moulting and the ground is frozen and snow covered
That's great! I use lots of whole sunflower seeds in my bird feeder, and it's interesting that some birds love them and will spit out all the millet and other seeds to get them, while some birds can't open them, so they spit them out. Seems to make sure everyone gets something they like!
Hemp seeds are the ultimate chicken feed IMO. They have ~30% protein & high omega 3 fats. The 1913 USDA yearbook in agriculture talks about how good they are for bird feed.
That’s hecka funny: I am reminded of wading into an argument on whether chickens have two legs or four legs. Children of the suburbs pretty much know nothing!
In college I made friends with a freshman who had never seen a live chicken or cow in her life.
I took her to meet my neighbors, one of whom owned an egg farm and the other a dairy farm. I worried about the dirt/smells, but 30 years later she still talked excitedly about meeting cows and chickens.
That is cute Joyce. You just reminded me of an associate telling us her husband was rubbing a goldfish stomach for hours then it started swinging again.
My hubby is a devoted chicken farmer as well, looking after his little flock of 30+ ... they love their daily snack of BOS (Black Oil Sunflower seeds) shells and all ... tell your hubby these are the type of sunflower seeds he needs to feed his chickens ... and other birds ... 😉
I was noticing the sharpness of some of the pieces of cracked corn I was tossing to the ground the other day and had a moment of pause, but then I remembered the chicken’s picture on the bag.
Does your husband interact with the chickens on a daily basis? I love birds in general, chickens in particular. Chickens recognize faces. I used to push over my sunflower plants and let the chickens eat the seeds directly off of the flower.
My husband has been having discussions this morning with our 40-pound dog Teddy about why Teddy can’t stay outside in 20-degree weather. Teddy’s answers are short but determined. Hubs can be cute!
My father in law loves our backyard chickens so much that he prepares a platter of tiny chopped veggies herbs and mealworms for them every single morning. they’re total jerks to everyone else but they jump into his arms to cuddle. Something about that dude-chicken relationship is endearing af
My parents used to raise chickens and feed them our plant based kitchen scraps. They have a gizzard which grinds up what they swallow. We even used to give them ground oyster shells for stronger egg shells and they didn’t choke. We kept their pen clear of debris, will eat anything almost like goats!
AWWWWWWW!! I think he's the cutest thing, too!! Sounds like someone who would be a great dad. Also sounds like something my grandson-in-law would ask! LOL
Hi Joyce, Are chickens a lot of work? I’ve been considering getting some and have heard that it actually cost more to raise chickens then buy eggs. Would love some feedback.
They are so adorable when they say things like that. My husband just asked if it was safe to let our cat eat the bits of carrots that are literally in the cat food.
I saw a flock take out a 4ft snake. I opened my door, saw they were half way done with the bloody mess and noped my way back inside. I call it the dark side of free range.
The chickens will be fine; they just chew up the shells and spit them out like a professional baseball manager does and then stuff their mouth with a handful more of those seeds. Its the cutest thing to watch the chickens spit that crap out.

Sorry, the Internet has spoken.😂
Thanks!

It's just what we all need, nice news. 😉🙃✌🏻

Chickens are just tiny little velociraptors that would probably try to take us down were they capable....
I think they’re more like a tiny T-Rex.
They bite us all the time.
