It’s the last month for this SCOTUS term, so I put together a little cheat sheet to help you understand the context & significance as the Court announces decisions. With more than 30 left to go, they’ll start coming fast & furious as we get into the month. joycevance.substack.com/p/the-week-a...

Law enforcement officers should never cover their faces when making arrests or conceal their identities (unless they are working undercover). They work for us. We have a right to know who they are. These face coverings are frightening & unAmerican, as though they're ashamed of what they're doing.

Anyone else trying to stay up and see the Northern Lights tonight? www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/w...

Civil Discourse, my newsletter on Substack, is turning 3. If you're not already a subscriber, come by for a free test drive. Analysis/explanations at the intersection of law and politics, but a lot of people stick around for the pictures of my adorable chickens. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

Also, that time Justice Thomas sat on the Trump v. U.S. case where the Court gave Trump broad criminal immunity in a 6-3 decision, even though Thomas' wife had been *very* pro-Jan 6 protests. How quickly a president's crazy makes a country forget joycevance.substack.com/p/trump-must...

Continuing my walk down memory lane: Remember the time Justice Alito spoke with Trump by phone to ask a favor—hire a former law clerk— just as Trump's request that the Court prevent an NY state judge from sentencing him following conviction by jury was filed? joycevance.substack.com/p/the-final-...

You need this in your timeline! Stop to listen. Amazing.

Remember when Donald Trump got caught with all sorts of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago after saying he didn't have anything, and then he got indicted but the judge slow walked the case to death? Yup. He did that.

A radical transformation of our way of life is underway. Don’t let anyone gaslight you into thinking this administration is normal.

Judge: “You stand accused of murder in the first degree. How do you plead?” “Well, we are all going to die.” Judge: “Release this man!”

Now, who exactly is it that benefits from a 10 year ban on regulating AI? Let me think… apnews.com/article/ai-r...

The plaintiff, a victim of Epstein, claims the gov't concealed its conduct for years & "At no time did the FBI or any other government entity reach out to Maria to investigate or seek to understand or resolve her claims or otherwise in any way substantively respond to her claim.

Wow

Investigators believe the man may have been framed to get him arrested & deported before he could testify in a case where he was a victim of assault. The person who spoke to the AP did so on condition of anonymity, because they couldn't speak publicly. apnews.com/article/ice-...

The Democrat’s top line ad theme for the midterms…

“The company’s security practices are only as good as the people using them, they said. They characterized some DOGE employees as sloppy on security, such as not following protocols in how personal devices were used.” www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/t...

The Wisconsin Judge indicted by DOJ has filed a motion to dismiss her indictment. "The indictment is an ugly innovation." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

I have questions about Musk’s departure from DOGE, and we don’t really have good answers. Sometimes, it’s important to just put down the markers. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

Looking forward to the confirmation hearing.

Lots of legal news this week, so easy to miss that NPR has filed a lawsuit against Trump. Protecting the 1st Am & the balance of power among the 3 branches of gov't is a big deal right now & it's all happening here. joycevance.substack.com/p/big-bird-f...

Your vote for Trump at work

Healey said that while she denounced antisemitism..the Trump administration’s actions are “not about stopping antisemitism..“This isn’t about that issue..it’s simply a pretext for attacking anyone with whom the president or the administration has disagreement.” www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

I wouldnt be too quick to buy this. Musk got what he came for all along—our personal information. The world’s richest guy doesn’t walk away from a $250 mil investment empty handed. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/28/u...

NPR's new lawsuit is a powerhouse, identifying multiple, independent ways the Trump administration violated the Constitution in order to take revenge on public media. Bottom line? This administration is scared of the truth & this lawsuit reveals that weakness. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

Why does Trump keep pardoning Americans who are the kind of people he claims he's deporting, while he continues to try to deport students & people facing persecution if they're removed? www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

“The Court of International Trade ruled Wednesday that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority in imposing tariffs on all imported goods, calling an immediate halt to his signature trade war policy.” www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

If you're trying to keep up with the deportation cases, this is one of the most interesting interviews I've had the privilege of doing. Cecillia knows the cases because she's one of the lawyers litigating them. If you want the facts and the law all in one place, take a listen.

Last night I wrote a post about recent developments at the FBI that seem to be mostly flying beneath the radar screen. This one feels particularly important—they all are these days, but this one especially so. I hope you'll take a moment to read and share it. joycevance.substack.com/p/fbi-top-pr...

Our youngest has graduated from college and is (surprisingly capably) acting as my assistant for a few weeks while he looks for a job. I'm also getting some laughs out of it, like this one, after I had him get breakfast tacos from our favorite local place.

There’s an Orwell 1984 quote for everything. Just insert your own here. The death of truth.

Where are all of my tough on crime, law and order Republicans?

Not the point of this story, but, “Gulf of Mexico” made me smile www.nytimes.com/2025/05/27/s...

FBI Director Kash Patel and his Deputy Dan Bongino have identified three top priority cases for the Bureau. It may not look like much on the surface, but the implications are concerning. Here, nuance is everything. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

On Tuesday, the government said it had already moved Eyidi Ambila to an ICE facility in Massachusetts, outside the court's jurisdiction, and had slated him for "imminent removal."

In what is shaping up to be a huge day for democracy in the lower federal courts, at least, Judge Chutkan rules that the case against DOGE can proceed.

Two exclamation points in the opening paragraph of a fed'l judge's opinion is unusual. Judge Leon enjoins Trump's entire EO against the Wilmer Cutler law firm, going beyond the relief they asked for. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

I don't frequently find myself in full agreement with Justice Gorsuch, but his dissent from SCOTUS' decision not to hear a case involving the destruction of a site that is sacred to Western Apaches seems to me not only legally correct, but beautifully written. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...
