I've assumed the strategy was to corner the market with cheap VC-funded compute and then jack the price up.

That makes a product like Llama or DeepSeek an existential threat as it gives consumers a realistically affordable/comparable option.

OpenAI has no product strategy. The majority of their revenue is from unprofitable subscription products, their models are commoditized, and they make very little from people plugging their models into other products - suggesting the demand really isn't there.
