This piece!! You did such a marvelous job on this one. Ever since I saw it, I've always had it in the back of my mind. It single-handedly taught me how strong dithering can truly be
that wasn't the problem with dithering for me, when you're doing an art piece (not assets for videogame) it takes as long as it takes. My issues with it started when I started to notice some internal banding problems with the concept of basic dither patterns and how they emphasize single pixels
Oh I see, I really appreciate that mentality for art. That's actually really interesting, I think I understand what you're saying with the banding. I've always considered that a limitation of the art form, but never really gave it much thought before
Well said, but I also subscribe to the idea that good art museums should be institutions that expose people to things they aren't familiar with. I guess I should have said 'gallery' but that often encompasses for-profit.
Thinking of the Victoria & Albert in London or the AGO in Toronto.
of course it'd be great if there were tangible ways to expose more people to the art form, but as it is a digital medium it is beyond the reach of the art world for all the bad (and predominantly good) that comes with. NFTs were the excretable attempt, but nearly no good artist signed on thank god
This is the piece that taught me dithering could make brand new colors and not just shades between colors. Now I do some ridiculously dumb things with dithering and achieve moderately decent results.
