They did this a while ago, which made the rest of the world realize that rare earths weren't really that rare, it was just cheaper to buy them from China. But a little research reveals there are new ways to mine them, that are even cheaper than that. We don't need them anymore.

The mining is the easy. The hard part is the refining and only China has the infrastructure to refine the minerals at the scale we need. To get that capability would take decades of investment under the best of conditions. We have no allies & no manufacturing in the middle of a trade war.

I'm not sure I agree. The scale is surprisingly small, as the main uses are as dopants, which are used in tiny quantities. I'm also dubious about the "decades of investment" for fairly simple processes that have been known for many years. That said, we'll probably buy them from Japan.

Yes the refining tech came from the U.S. but China has mastered the process and now U.S. companies are nowhere close to being able to replicate those results. China knows how to do this cheaply and that’s why they refine the vast majority of it.

We had been trying since 2017 to become less reliant, but now we’re doing away with the Dept of Ed, deporting skilled immigrants, and defunding research at our universities. We had a good foundation and were able to run on fumes for a long time but no more. We don’t have the juice anymore.
