Here are some of Holbein's portraits. I don't think I managed to capture the delicacy or the life! But to be fair to myself, I'm not Holbein... I wanted to keep the notes and pen-trials on the page, like he did.

When I look at his work it strikes me as obvious he used an optical aid like a camera lucida, the line work is too delicate to * not be * traced. After your efforts, what do you think?

Oh interesting. I didn't know about those. I wondered how he'd got those lines so perfect and thought it was just because he was better than mere mortals. But yes, I think it must be that. And the rest of it is delicate but very literal - perfect note-taking for the final portrait.
