The tariff setup, where either markets turn out to be very wrong or Trump turns out to have been massively bluffing about his core economic promise, is very intellectually satisfying.

I don't think they have declared and IEEPA emergency yet which would be required for the tariffs to be legal. Lots of people have legal standing to challenge any blanket tariffs. It is a big bluff.

there has to be something in it for him personally. He may be informing market participants to profit off of swings. Or he is asking for some kind of personal payola. Or he really will do it and hope to eliminate income tax in favor of tariffs.

This news item is phrased in a way to suggest Trump has all the leverage but I suspect it’s actually the other way around, as the clowns in the administration try to find something they can claim is a win to back down from destructive tariffs.

My take is the economic advisors are desperately trying to stave it off, while Trump is all in. The market and savvy fin journalists assume the advisors give him something shiny enough to avoid it from happening. I don’t think his thinking has changed at the moment
