There are not really any scary as in dangerous bugs in Aotearoa. It is a beautiful native wētā which I am personally love just suprised me by all of a sudden being on my leg 😅😅😅
I once had one come down the chimney of the student flat bedroom I was sleeping in, and wake me up by biting my toe. I, uh, expressed my feelings to it with the fire poker.
Not so common, but depends on your exposure to trees and native forests. I would say for me, in relatively urban area, I see one every few years randomly in a corner of a garage or on a path
Lovely! I happened across one hiding in my car's (detached) roof when I lived in Auckland. I dragged my husband out, pointed at it, and said "What the FUCK is that?" It was my first time seeing one in real life. He laughed, then said there would be another nearby. He was right.
While I would likely be terrified of that lil' creature up close and personal, I am slowly expanding my personal boundaries about fear as often as I can.
Followed with interest because you have a kind respect for nature and seem to be very cool.
