Catcher. To compare catchers to any other position for a cumulative stat like hits is unreasonable since they can’t play every day so then the hypothetical new HOFer would need to be defined as a catcher.
But I also should have excluded Kiner since his career was delayed due to military service so, he’s a poor fit for his portion of the scenario since I think service is a unique factor to account for.
That said, we know not all hits are the same and Wilson, one of the weaker HOFers, led his league in homers 4x and, all factors considered, I don’t think these style of RPs’ IP (outs) are more valuable than SP outs. I actually think they’re less challenging.
Yet (re Wilson’s league leads in HRs) the closer about to be elected, who had incredibly coddled outings in which the vaaaast majority were designed around getting 3 or fewer outs with a 1-3 run lead, never even led his Rivera-less league 1x in the stat his outings were designed to net, Saves.
