I think you were right first time - I'd say that is a slime mould, something in the region of Didymium squamulosum. The cracking to reveal the dark brown spore masses and the swarming habit point that way I'd say. I see Fenugreek Stalkball quite a lot and it is usually in lines, often in bark cracks

Fruit bodies of Phleogena faginea are not usually this regular in shape, and the spore mass looks like it has white lime nodes like a slime molds in Physaraceae

I don't think it's Didymium because it looks like there's lime in the spore mass

Keep in mind it is difficult to be 100% sure without a closer look. Sometimes peridial fragments do a decent impression of lime. These do look internal to me, though
