Vh1 and MTV use to play non stop videos from all genres and it exposed you to different artists and forced you to become a fan. I miss the diversity and exposure. I feel completely out of the loop when it comes to music now.

My mom moved from the west coast to New York and was the first person I knew who had MTV. When I went to visit the first time she had it, it was Thanksgiving and rather than cook, we ordered delivery and watched it nonstop, and shared what we loved and hated.
Same. I just posted on here yesterday I wished Billboard would place a speaker next to the top songs that played a snippet of the chorus so I could know what the non-radio friendly songs sound like.
MTV was the ultimate "decompress after a long study session" strategy for us late 80s college students. Now my satellite radio is tuned to the 80s progressive channel and the only new music I know about is what plays during happy hour at my local alternative lifestyle choice watering hole.
😂 I was humming Panic At The Disco and that’s what made me think about this. Every black person I knew had at least 1 favorite white song because of those channels 😂
There's some extreme truth to this. It's taken me YEARS to train my YouTube algorithm not to just hone in on one genre. I'm still working on Spotify and Amazon.
Same, I remember watching music videos all day long with my cousin during the summer. We knew every song on every radio station whether we liked them or not.
I listen to a lot of the DJ type channels on YouTube, Tiny Desk, they have a good mix of everything. There’s also a music video channel on Roku called XITE

We still share music enthusiastically.
The radio was our downloading. Mix tapes, MY GOD THE MIX TAPES
if you had an artsy crush? Their tapes had so much beauty it almost didn't matter what was on it.
