My mom worked for the U.S. State Dept. in Europe 1949-55. Her first reaction when I came out was flashbacks to (closeted) queer colleagues who threw themselves off a roof when McCarthy’s goons planned a visit. Not homophobia per se, but “my kid may have to suicide to protect her loved ones.”

Not even close to how many for what reasons. Antiwar protesters, Civil rights, Feminists, Average people the IRS persecuted, AIM protesters, Black Panthers. We had our mail opened because of the IRS. It took decades to reset and they want to go back to it now.
