William Shirer’s classic, “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” answers your question in the affirmitive. Shirer was a great reporter for the Chicago Tribune & was fluent in German. The “Rise” part of the book (prior to his expulsion) is an eyewitness account. One big caveat: Shirer’s homophobic views.
