Framing critiques of generative AI as political is deeply silly man, not sure what to tell you. RAG search is about as far from "shockingly advanced" as it gets. It isn't even AI! It's search but slightly better!! What exactly is "insane" about it? Disappointing stuff

They’re far from perfect to be sure, but five-ten years ago they were absolute science fiction. 50+ year off stuff.
The Attention Is All You Need Paper was written in *2017*, so no, this was not "absolute science fiction" five or ten years ago. Jesus christ
And even the people writing that paper probably didn’t think that LLM would have advanced this quickly. They had a great idea, I do not think they thought it would scale as well as it has. The general scientific public for sure didn’t have any clue this was coming.
Wouldn't you have more *faith* in that?
For comparison, five years after Microsoft Windows released, they had 90% of the market and, if you used a computer, you probably used Windows.
That's what an actual revolutionary tech product looks like.
More than enough reason not to use it.
And yeah it’s obviously political, try saying something positive about AI here (vs elsewhere) and see what kind of responses you get!
Not infallible to be sure! But a really really valuable resource.
I also think people really over-estimate how much power they currently use (vs everything else).
Since they aren't being deployed where they make sense, how do you justify the immense waste
Also the reason this is getting so much criticism is because of the tonality and scolding of non believers.
LLMs also have no viable commercial use. Like at all. It's just end stage capitalism's latest (final?) snake oil.
(Also I’d be very surprised if LLMs helped find antibiotics, it was almost surely some other kind of model)
