I was as hooked on the bird site as one could be. I posted every day for 15+ years. I even cowrote a book about it. I deleted my content and went private the day the sale went through. I revisited only once. If I did it, you can too.

We were like that with Itsatrap :)
Question: Where do you spend most time? Threads or Bluesky or even Mastadon
The fragmentation is a real headache, which has always been the strength of Twitter / X
I made the move yesterday. I kept getting in trouble over there. I'm impressed with your background and your incredibly permanent cutting of the cord. Well done!
Well done 🎉 This is the answer. We are the product. If he doesn’t have users he doesn’t have advertisers. If we don’t provide content he can’t thrive. Don’t give him any more of your time. #xodus
I haven't used it in any real way since the sale. I actually took a long break from most social media until after the election and saw there were a lot of good takes happening here. So I'm here now.
I was more of a consumer there. Will contribute more here. But getting established here has been tricky. I left my account open there for no good reason, rethinking that upon reading your post. Thank you.
I deactivated today. I received a DM that shook me to the core. Threats of violence over fact checking someone and I had enough. Call me all the names you want but threaten my family…I am out.
Amen, Nancy. Giving up 31.4K followers curated through 15 years of work supporting the site and adding to its content. No more - that ended yesterday. Finding my way in other places, including @bsky.app and hoping others find their way here too!
The algorithms on social media train people to brainwash themselves into a silo, to make themselves smalled people. This needs to be pointed out, because "free speech" tends to drown out everything else. No one can eat free speech, and most people don't make a living writing.
I did the same and went to #Threads and then here. Noteworthy is @karaswisher.bsky.social, who jettisoned 1.5M followers to leave X and go to Threads and now has a presence here. She is an epic #journalist worth following.
It was interesting because as a coping mechanism I did let myself engage with rage, I responded, imitated that style of messaging, and felt myself getting no where. The dopamine hit was beyond fleeting. And yet time consuming.
A book to read related to this is: "Dark Persuasion: A History of Brainwashing from Pavlov to Social Media." Propaganda has always existed, but new technologies make it vastly more powerful now than it was in, let's say, the early 20th century.
Got rid of mine the day the sale went through and I’ve never looked back. Tried Threads briefly. Just discovered Bluesky. I think I’m going to like it!
I feel like the momentum is finally here, a majority of the network has migrated away, but it's still hard to figure out how to combine Mastodon with Bluesky. I don't want to double post, but with low adoption of bridges like @ap.brid.gy and interaction remaining siloed... need to make choices!
The more time and energy we invest into things, the more committed we are to continuing with that thing. It's standard psychology, exploited by marketers to control us.
Kudos to everyone who has broken the shackles of the profit-motivated platforms and migrated to @bsky.social.
I saw nazi signs on there today with far too many folks that I thought knew better normalizing it. I cried & am in the transition away from there. This place gives me hope

I’m out of there.
But then politics went all over the place, and I got drawn back into the yelling machine.
Didn't want to, wasn't healthy to, but was driven to.
Until block no longer meant block. Now I'm easing myself out the dead bird door.

Now, go recruit!
