The report captures a key point about the scalability of geothermal: we're really good at drilling. In the last 5 years, the number of wells we've drilled in the top 5 shale plays is equivalent to 133GW of geothermal capacity. We can build this stuff at speed and scale.

If not, you can bet China and Europe will listen. Probably great opportunities to scale up quickly in Africa, the Caribbean, New Zealand, South America, etc. And it likely doesn't need to be co-located with volcanism anymore with new tech, although those locations will be easiest (a la Iceland)

What's ironic is that because it uses the same tech as fracking, Fervo has an edge. Trying to work on a piece here in the UK re geothermal potential - but most places on earth if you go down 5000m or so you can get some good potential.

This seems like the smartest public works project ever for Planet Earth. Every major city drill down to geothermal to power their grid, public transit, hospitals, colleges, businesses, etc. Small towns could use wind and solar + batteries. We could do this. We probably won't. Fast enough.

I'm not gonna hold my breath either, but Mike Lee's a fan, and it came up a lot in Wright's confirmation hearing. Partly because - spoiler alert - Wright was actually an investor in Fervo. Ironically fracking gives you a pretty good skill set for enhanced geothermal.

Is geothermal resource overlapping with the fiber optic grid, and if not would that be a constraint to its use case?
