ITINS are necessary in that situation to file, they need a legitimate tax number from the IRS that's attached to them. There's other reasons for ITINS as well such as nonresidents being claimed as dependents. You don't use fake SSNs to file, only on the W2s.

When electronically filing we're creating an electronic copy of the W2, including the fake SSN. On the actual tax form we use the ITIN

As for which is more common, real SSNs obviously since most people who file are citizens or legal residents with the right to work. I maybe got 5-10 undocumented* workers a season, out of 400+ returns

*I hate that term they ALL have documentation, but "illegal" is worse

You may ask why do they file? It's simple, they want their excess withholding back. They have to pay income tax too and the best way to do that is have withholding. They're using an ITIN issued by the IRS and fake SSNs on the W2s so you have to be careful to put the correct numbers in the right spot

The one thing I miss from tax preparation was doing non-citizen returns and foreign income. Each country of origin had different rules due to treaties.

The Comptroller of the State of Texas put out a report that immigrants were a large net positive to the Texas economy in 2006. That report was never repeated because it didn't fit.

I have lost multiple good coworkers at jobs for doing the above. it drives me wild for the GOP to claim the immigrants steal job and cash checks. it's not both true. moral argument alone makes sense but double for economic one

Yeah in my experience undocumented workers, well, they just want to work and have families. They'll work a dozen jobs a year if they have to. One guy I did taxes for worked two full time jobs *at once*. Hardest working people I ever met. Good people I'd rather have them as neighbors than anyone else

they also have a lower crime rate than ppl born in the US. I really hate the Democrats for giving up on the positives of immigration
