Lotta talk about efficiencies of scale, and I've gotta say, it's a hard argument to beat. I don't know if there is a case for the status quo - with the number of councils and split between regional and city/district, let alone between city and district even.

Anne Tolley brings up online voting, Nanaia highlights voting system needs to change and civics education should sit with local govt.

My take: WEL Energy uses online voting and they've got the worst voter turnout of all - 5%~.

Local body voting should run the same way as general elections. Make it easy to vote in advance, but have polling stations on election day as well. No more postal votes 🙅‍♀️

Efficiency of scale is one thing I think debatable above a certain size One thing that does happen if you centralise staff is that you strip money and resources out of smaller centres as people tend to move to live closer to work and all their expenditure moves with them.

Being involved in the amalgamation in Auckland was fascinating & horrible at the same time. The assumption of many staff at the larger councils (regional & local) was they knew best about everything yet the smaller councils were often nimbler and more innovative bc they had to do more with less.
