This sounds like me working on my dissertation (and most other research papers since then). There were things I knew I'd have to cover, and it came down to writing the outline and then grinding through it. I liked some parts better than others, but I'm told that happens in fiction too.
Sorry, that was a little bit of insider talk. A 'pantser' is a writer who improvises their book as they go along. As opposed to a 'plotter' who plans the whole thing out in advance first.
