It's even worse if you consider Nobel prize share. 4/5 the women who got the prize got a quarter share: the smallest share given by the committee. Only the most recent woman got more: a third share
My guess: a change in the instructional program (CIP) codes used in the IPEDs.
A lot of wackadoodle (technical term) things can happen in the IPEDs data after DoE adopts a new CIP scheme. It's not always immediately apparent, either, b/c unis have to update their internal data reporting process.
Is that data world wide or just US institutions? If just US, could it be a result of 9/11, and the subsequent drop in international students at US schools?
