one thing that was evident from reading the occasional classic was people have been peopling forever and the only things that change are relatively fine-grained methodological details
I just learned about wax tablets the other day. They were literally notepads on the go because pen and ink was really cumbersome if you were doing stuff, ie on a job site, and people etched into the hard wax they could scrape/rub to erase the wax, and then just melt it all to erase the entire thing
a fun thing learnt a few weeks ago was that everyone used to carry a bit of chalk in their pocket to leave messages on doors and walls when people were out.
