We used data from the 2023 Alberta Viewpoints Survey and interviews through May-August of 2023 to understand how the Tripledemic (the spread of COVID-19, influenza and RSV) shaped the work and family lives of Alberta parents and how they manage conflict between their roles.

A majority of protective measures like masking and social distancing were lifted in the fall of 2022. So, we were also interested to see what strategies parents used to manage repeated infections without COVID-19 related supports and guidance.

We found that more than half of respondents missed AT LEAST one day of work or school due to their child’s, or a family member’s illness.

Twenty-nine percent missed 1-6 days
17% missed 1-4 weeks
8% missed a month or more

Those who missed longer periods of work were much more likely to report strong negative effects from workplace absence, and mothers were more likely to miss work for extended periods of time.

Poverty class and working class respondents were also much more likely to report strong negative effects from missing work. This suggests that lower-paying jobs were less forgiving when it came to sickness related absences.

The stress of the increased circulation of illness was compounded by a lack of guidance from schools and daycares alongside increased pressure to “get back to normal” at work. Some parents were able to access resources like sick days, but these were quickly used up.
