I think one thing a lot of people fail to realize is that - if there is such a thing as a Canadian identity - a ton of it is wrapped up in the idea that we are not American. It's pervasive in our media, and every Canadian knows this because people abroad treat you better when you tell them.

Trump, and maybe his dumbest supporters (on either side of the border) are the only ones taking this idea seriously, but there are many more folks parroting it to toe the Trump line, or to troll.
Americans are taught that they're the greatest country in the world. Nobody else is taught that.
