What ppl may not realize is how much of the scientific work force doing actual hands-on work - faculty, technicians, students, core equipment operators, animal techs etc- are funded all or in part by indirect funds. Univs use them eg to pay for common use facilities & bridge salaries between grants.

Hunch: The cuts in NIH indirect research costs will cause a real backlash. It's not just that medical research will be hurt. Those funds support many people of all incomes directly and indirectly. And the suddenness and lack of consultation makes it seem arbitrary, as it was.
