In 1914, Cashier was admitted to a hospital & his gender history was revealed. This jeopardized his veteran status so his former military comrades testified to his right to a pension. When Cashier died, he was buried in his uniform with full military honors.

I was telling his story (and other historic LGBTQ stories)to some college students a few months ago. I was saddened by how little they already knew of queer history but heartened that they wanted to learn
