The kicker here is so important: "Veterans were the lone group among whom homelessness declined last year, the report found. That continues a long-term trend driven by bipartisan support for services and housing..." There are strategies for fixing this problem that have shown success.

I live in LA and I've seen homeless advocates argue seriously that we need to keep people on the streets until they are capable of existing in stable housing. Like "this person prone to violent outbursts needs to live on a public street for their own good." Genuine sociopaths

The only people I've ever seen seriously argue against housing first are conservatives that think homeless people should just be shot and the most "progressive" californians you'd be unfortunate enough to meet.

The thing people don’t think about is that you can’t exist in stable housing without… stable housing?

I lived in airbnbs for about eight months, and didn’t have access to the mailbox, which meant I didn’t have a stable mailing address. The challenges that alone presented were absurd.

As I’ve said ad nauseam, we know that Housing First works when implemented properly. The problem is that you can’t scale it up in a cost effective manner in regions that don’t have ample housing stock.

Housing First is harder and more expensive for people who are not vets, because there is already a vet system set up, and vets are already in the system and entitled to health care. Housing First is still the way but we should understand the challenges for non-vets.

VA’s healthcare system is the template. It’s not perfect, but try to find a Veteran who would trade it away. It must be protected from the Orange Gelatinous and his minions, who will privatize it or kill it.

In CA we also dedicated a multi-billion dollar housing GO bond to provide capital $ for Vets PSH (VHHP). We are now starting to see in some markets, we are “running out” of homeless Vets to fill these units!

This seems to indicate strategies that work with vets might help with the overall problem, meaning government could really do a lot to reduce the problem of homelessness, but some people don’t want them to do that and some politicians don’t want to do it because of “woke” or some other nonsense.
