So the President not only fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He also fired the top JAGs at the Army, Navy and Air Force. Those are the lead people who determine what is a legal order and what is not. So if you're planning to do things that are illegal they're the most obvious obstacle.

I’m struck by how much the most vehement theocrats behave like they don’t fear the judgment of an angry God

In this thread, I'll be sharing California YIMBY's 2025 legislative package. We are supporting an excellent group in legislators in running one of the most ambitious pro-housing agendas in California history—and this is only the beginning.

It's genuinely wild how rattled they are

Okay but otherwise he'd definitely pass a security clearance, right

My hope is that as the economy gets worse, Congress will stir from its coma and push back on some of this administration's most belligerent impulses.

One data point: Most people don't like it when you heil hitler, which is why Musk and Bannon both did such limp and half-hearted versions.

*wearily* fuhrerprinzip

We're doing it, folks

A funny argument that I sometimes see on this website is, "Speculative investors are artificially raising rents by limiting the supply of housing, which is why increasing housing supply will not lower rents."

it is nice to regularly have my day interrupted by reminders of teeny tiny gremlins paid by my own tax dollars to kill me

I happen to be reading David Blight's Frederick Douglass bio right now and I'm at the point where Douglass splits with William Lloyd Garrison over, among other things, the latter's anti-politics and disunionism. Obviously, Douglass was correct and vindicated by history.

You know? I still find it remarkably easy to remain patriotic throughout this administration. Trump and the MAGA crowd are a repudiation of every single civic ideal that the United States is meant to represent—and I see no reason to stop believing in those ideals because of them.

You are not going to get me to grant a hypothetical scenario where unionists should peacefully cede D.C. to the confederates.

Can’t get over how many nominal progressives look at the DOGE coup—an object lesson in how complicated and delicate the machinery of state is, and how many things can go wrong if you push huge, unplanned changes—and say, the obvious solution is we should simply dissolve the union.

Again, Elon Musk is -blitzed out of his mind -incapable of understanding why someone in full possession of their faculties would give their life for something bigger than themself.

Cracks in the dam status: growing

IMO journalists shouldn’t grant people anonymity if the sensitive information they’re providing is “I personally disagree with the fascist coup but won’t do anything about it.”

Activists who help topple authoritarian regimes sometimes struggle to transition into legislators responsible for governing a state. One of the US's problems right now is the opposite: legislators used to governing a democratic state don't grasp how to be activists against an authoritarian regime.

Trying to give himself some plausible deniability by doing the world’s most flaccid sieg heil

I’ve been going back to Civil War era/Reconstruction history because it’s my fucked up way of processing anxiety about the present moment, and it’s remarkable how many savvy observers in the 1850s agreed slavery was going to be around forever.

“Authoritarian rule with social democratic policies” doesn’t work. There is a reason why no existing authoritarian system has ever looked like that and it’s not just because the wrong people were in charge.

the Constitution includes the Reconstruction amendments that we literally passed over the bodies of slaveowners

He didn't just say he was going to build a resort hotel in Gaza, he laid out a proposal for the ethnic cleansing and annexation of Gaza. I do in fact think it matters when Israel's closest ally and commander in chief of the world's foremost military power does that.
