I am still 100% as mad about it as that night. A little rage forms when I just see the name listed as I scroll through channel guide looking for something/ anything to watch.
I'm one of those that hated the finale - it should have been a catalogue of all the scenes we'd flash forwarded to for the series. It was all *right there* laid out for them. They'd already done the work; it would be a glorified clip show and that's exactly what fans wanted. The whole point 1/2
of the series was kind of redundant and I felt like an idiot for having wasted my time. In their attempt to be cutesy and clever, they took a sledgehammer to their own show. Bizarre. 2/2
You got it immediately right. I’ve really never been able to enjoy the repeats because of that ending. Cristin Milotti was so good and really announced to the world that she was a screen talent on HIMYM.
I enjoyed reading that. Funny enough, I was someone who watched the first four(ish) years, and then didn’t watch again until the finale. I remember my reaction was it being clunky, but mostly satisfying. Crazy to think that somehow I ended up being the the target audience for the finale
It's a well-written and well-thought piece regardless, but how much of your analysis of the creators' thought process and when/how they made certain decisions is reported vs. your informed speculation? (I'm not criticizing the piece, I'm just fascinated by the story of the decision-making.)
Bit of both. I'd interviewed them several times, they'd spoken about exactly when they shot the final sequence with the kids, and it was easy to fill in a lot of the blanks from there.
Gotcha. Thanks. My impression of the finale is that it would have been a good conclusion for a series about the value of finding love in a world where life is fragile, where time leads people both away and toward each other. I wonder when - or even if - they thought they were making such a show.
