Well, it's a 3mx which is ~27 MHz, so I'm getting quite a bit of a speed boost compared to a 3a at 7.68 MHz. It usually takes about 3-6 seconds to move between rooms, at least with this game.

Is there an inform *compiler* for the 3a/mx? (I could never get my head around i7, and I *think* the system is effectively a precompiler for i6, allowing the use of more natural (though still formulaic) language to specify the game?

You don't need a special compiler to target the Psion. However a lot of I7 games are compiled to a different virtual machine standard nowadays ("glulx" instead of the Infocom Z-Machine). I7 games suffixed .z5 or .z8 may run, probably veeeerrrrry slloooooowwwwly. (There may also be stack issues.)
