The family room is a space to relax together. The parlor used to be the formal space, which also doubled as the space for wakes and receptions for hosting funerals. In the time between funerals, in order to reclaim that room it was renamed the “living” room.
Depends. I grew up in a home that had a living room that doubled as the family room. Used to have 2 separate rooms. Living room-company only. Family room-TV watching, etc. After 2nd child born, family room=dad’s office/ham shack & living room=the family room. Back to one room in new place after move
You can also have a parlor, a small formal room at the front of the house where you welcome guests, separate from the living room where the TV might be, unless the TV is in the den.
In my day, the family room had a TV. The only time I was invited to the living room was to be lectured for cutting school and smoking.
Also, my dad sat us down to tell us he got a vasectomy. That was a little weird to tell his kids aged 13, 11, and 8.
Depends on how rich/into society functions you are.
A living room is a more formal room to entertain guests if you also have a family room where you/fam/kids hang. The kids could be in the family room while you/spouse entertain your guests in the living room.
You can have a breakfast nook and/or bar stools/island and/or dinette area for regular family eating, and a formal large dining area for when you entertain guests.
It all goes back to high society, entertaining guests, keeping kids/fam area separate.

The family room is where people fight over the remote.

Family room is where you have more comfortable furniture, more casual, can put your feet up, etc
