Well the lack of trust isn’t unwarranted! This allows them to track individual subscribers (not opt in like the gift link was) since your share link will have a unique identifier on it that allows it to bypass the paywall. So the NYT thinks that that data is valuable enough to give away articles.
After 25+ years of trying to understand how to make a newspaper work over the internet, they finally understood it should work… like a newspaper.

Now, if they would adjust their writing, editorial, and headline policies to make the site not induce rage, maybe they could get subscribers back.
