It might be useful to add some clarity on recent media reports related to the US and the IPCC. Govts. nominate (but so can others) chairs, authors etc. but it is IPCC that chooses who serves. AFAICT there is no change in who is serving. - ThreadSky

We are at 1.5°C and even liberal climate scientists still drive cars, eat meat and fly? We are getting closer to 'who cares territory' by the second unless we show we are willing to also walk the the talk? Today, we don't even talk the talk? Comfort over self worth?

USGCRP had contracted out for some parts of WG3 technical support unit (TSU) - that contract has been suspended/terminated (I don’t know why or on what grounds). But note that USGCRP has been slow to be restaffed since Jan 20.

Author nominations for AR7 are likely to be announced in the next month or two. There is no restriction on the nationality of who can be nominated.

Support for govt. travel to go to IPCC meetings is ultimately approved by the State Dept. and no trips (even for State) were approved for the current meeting in China. Again, I don’t know why or on what grounds.

Thus despite some reports, there is no blanket prohibition on US scientists interacting with or serving with the IPCC.

I assume that US scientists may need to fund their own attendance at any in person IPCC meetings as usgcrp may not do so. But I am sure those selected will make every effort to do so.

This is my concern - this will de facto close down the participation of a lot of US scientists who were already badly stretched doing this stuff on nights and weekends. To have to cover (often expensive!) travel on top of it will be too much. I'm not sure if I could participate if nominated...

That is of course tough, but Belgian (and probably other) developed country authors were in that position in the last assessment cycle. Not because of a grand political decision, but rather because of admin challenges. It's hard but many have made it work and contributed!
