Last night at my 12 step group they said it helps to avoid being hungry, tired, or lonely, and I was like, “I can’t remember the last time I WASN’T all three of those things, it’s a miracle I’m not drunk right now.”

We used to say to watch if we are too hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. As these may explain our mood. It is a way to assign a feeling/mood to a proper cause rather than the spiral into “I might as well drink” when we have a feeling or act a certain way that we don’t like or gets us in trouble.
If you take drinking and killing yourself off the table, then it gives us a list of things we can do to get ourselves to a better place emotionally.
Rest
Eat something (so many times we forget to eat)
Be around people who care (go to meeting, talk to newcomer)
Work through anger (can I change it?)
Yep, HALT you are not supposed to discuss anything serious if you’re currently hungry, angry, lonely or tired. My husband told me about it and I said I guess we will never talk.
The good thing, at least for me, is I’m at the point where I know going back to drinking is not gonna make anything better. Just more problems that I really don’t fuckin need.
You for got angry. It’s HALT: hungry, angry, lonely, tired. And yeah, I’m usually all four of those these days. Sometimes I’ve just eaten and it goes down to three for a bit.
