Chinese companies are bylaw required to cooperate with the Chinese gov on everything. Even if companies are not doing anything now does not mean they won't act in the future when the time comes. It's what the Chinese called Unrestricted Warfare (超限戰). They have been promoting the idea since 1999.

And failures to act..

It's not a great look and people like security teams at @microsoft.com have some alarming findings...

3/ As Microsoft's Threat Intel found, #TPLINK routers make up the bulk of the CovertNetwork-1658 attack infrastructure.

Operator was conducting so-called password spray attacks, and taking steps to be discrete.

The credentials are then used by multiple #China-based threat actors....

4/ Concerns over vulnerable routers are not new in #cybersecurity & #infosec.

Super important issue that never gets enough attention.

#huawei ban is the parallel, If the US does wind up banning #TPLINK (timeline would likely place it in #Trump admin). Would be the biggest ban since then.

First of all, a lot of TP Link devices support OpenWRT well — that’s why I got one, but I haven’t switched over yet. I don’t know if low level stuff or hardware itself is compromised, but I’d certainly check out OpenWRT support alongside. It might be a pain but at least it gets updated.
