Perhaps publishers should try to do marketing, rather than rely on influencers and authors to do it. Just a thought!

as far as I know, which isn't a lot, outside of specialized de facto monopolies like textbooks, publishers don't make a whole lot of money

Re: backlist, I agree! But the media is partly to blame in having zero interest in older books.
Unless by marketing you mean ads on Google and Amazon? I feel like publishers *are* doing that.
