Presentations described as teaching LIS workers how to "responsibly implement" AI/genAI and the description will list off concerns like privacy and ethics without any acknowledgment that you cannot guarantee privacy or address the myriad ethical concerns with implementation.

Calling genAI use in particular "responsible" is such a dereliction of duty and an outright lie. It is disinformation coming from the mouths of library professionals. How have we veered so far from our mission?

You can pretend genAI can be "responsibly implementrd" all you want, but saying it doesn't make it true. Anymore than buying carbon credits helps the environment. And at this point you're either foolish enough to not do research or indifferent enough that you don't care.

I also don't want to hear "it's admin forcing it on us" because yeah, but often times it's frontline LIS workers eagerly lapping genAI up too. These presentations, they're not aimed at admin but regular LIS people. Most of the initiatives I see are coming from non-admin.

I feel like I'm watching bigots and book banners threatening our building with torches while my own colleagues are lining up with lit matches. Embedding AI/genAI in our field will only ruin us further and faster. If you can't see that, maybe this isn't the profession for you.

And to head this off at the pass, I'm specifically talking about LIS workers at all levels looking for ways to add AI/genAI into their work and patron services, not those of us stuck with genAI getting jammed into pre-existing services we can't opt out of or cancel.

really cool few years back when i did my student librarianship at a uni there was a big push for open science... and now a bunch of uni lib guides link to 'AI research tools' that I guarantee will present 'convincing' looking lit reviews while blowing a hole through the whole point in doing one

it's so frustrating to see the push for AI from people who should know better. i know of at least a few people who use generative ai for library fliers and not only is it unethical af, but it doesn't even look good. this is what they're burning resources and their integrity for?
