Libraries aren't supposed to make money either.

sesame street isn't supposed to make money. the post office isn't supposed to make money. not everything is supposed to MAKE MONEY

At a previous academic institution in my orientation to campus the campus leadership categorized the library with landscaping and snow removal as infrastructure that has to be there that is a money sink.

That's part of the problem with capitalism as a form of government. Everything is expected to buy and sell and end up with a profit. Some things just are going to have a cost to provide an awesome service. Schools, Libraries, and Hospitals just to name a few!

Yup. Librarian here. We are here for the public good, not to make money. If we were here for profit, people could expect fees to get a library card, possibly monthly fees to be able to use the card, fees for every little damage found (even tiny ones that currently we just overlook), etc.

I mean, the military is what got us our colonies and resources like oil. It got us our manifest destinym. It's been turning a pretty good profit for the US for a long time. (That's not a good thing.)
