Whenever I read them, the writings fill me with such sadness as I compare them with the level of political thought today. Of course I don't agree with many of the reasons they reached the conclusions they did - the electoral college is as much about protecting slavery as a check on mass democracy -
I think they are overrated. They are trying to sell the Constitution as negotiated. Lots of stuff they claim is ad hoc hopium; the Electoral College was never thought out and planned, it was a compromise hack and assumed parliamentary supremacy. They worried about foreign princes, not Trump.
They worried about demagogues, I doubt they could have conceived of Trump per se but he would absolutely have fitted the archetype of what they sought to prevent.
Compromises are of course negotiated and the electoral college was created at the end of a long and exhausting convention..
..but I've always found the FP (and other writings, letters, records of the convention) massively valuable insights into political philosophy, the thought processes behind the creation of a nation and its constitution and the nature of democracy.. ymmv 🙂
Is it really possible to design a system of government that holds up for 250 years? They were humble enough to make clear that the system would need to be refreshed. It's the fault of subsequent generations for failing to do so/doing so poorly.
No, they were arrogant enough to make it nearly impossible to amend in practice! If they saw the need for a refresh, they should have built in the tools to do it.
I think that’s like saying the inventor of airbags failed because somebody decided to drive 120mph into a concrete wall and died. Even the best checks and balances have a breaking point.
A lot of this was predicated on Congress being constituted, and the President being selected, in such a way that demagogues and monied interests couldn't easily create cabals of power.
Federalist Society: Conservative dipshits that don’t actually know the Constitution. A conservative project to shove conservative judges into federal benches.
Federalist Papers: Pro-Constitution propaganda (neutral) written by a number of Founding Fathers.
Elon is conducting a digital coup of the US Gov. OPM GSA treasury. Inspectors general gone, law enforcement gone. Republicans have long abdicated authority, they won't do anything. Democrats are playing in the old paradigm and have no power. Civil resistance on the street and in DC
So, it would be the responsibility of a federal district FBI office? Unbelievable that he would slide with breaking the law this blatantly. Like, don’t these agencies want to defend their own authority?
