I'm originally from southern Indiana, so the concept of being proud of my state is pretty foreign to me, to be honest. And having moved to Chicago, the fact of being an Illinois resident felt initially like an odd quirk. Like it's just some goofy fun fact about my life.

In the context of ongoing attacks against civil rights, though, living in Illinois has become a point of pride. I'm not kidding: we might have the best governor in the country. We have the strongest rights protections of the 50 states. Illinois fights for the marginalized.

I'm so fucking proud to live in Illinois. Saying that still feels strange to me, but it's true. To see that my state is one of few telling this administration, "Fuck you, I'll do the right thing regardless," makes me prouder to be "from" here than I've ever felt about being "from" a place.

When it comes down to it, I really feel like Illinois might be the only state in the Union that's truly willing to risk it all to protect the rights of the marginalized. And dammit, that's right the fuck where I want to be. I fucking love this state. I'm an Illinoisan, and we fight for your rights.

If someone had told me 10 years ago that I'd have so much civic pride for my state (and Governor!) that it would *regularly bring me to tears* I would have never believed them.

I wake up grateful every goddamn day that I live in Illinois.
