Some states go with the federal minimum wage (mostly red states). Others have different state & city minimum wages, like California. Our minimum wage is $16.50 per hour for all employers, but certain categories get more. The minimum wage in Los Angeles is $17.28, but again, some categories get more.

Minimum wage needs to be raised to $20 an hour and be tied to the Congressional compensation amount. If Congress raise their pay minimum wage gets raised by the exact same percentage.
Imagine how excited the people making less than $17.25 will be. Now when it gets voted down by their congress members (which of course it will), there will be many angry, younger protestors ready to express their thoughts. It’s possibly a calculated move for the resistance.
My first job after of high school was in a daycare. I made $7.50 and hour, which was huge compared to the $3.35 minimum wage. I had to have 12 units in ECE to get that pay.
Sadly, pay for daycare workers hasn't gone up very high in comparison. Yet, they are required more ECE units.
My first job out of college in 1996 I earned $13 an hour and it’s because I worked for wonderful people who understood the value of what I was doing for them.

Perhaps when we had a good economy as in the past few years the raise would have been good, but many small businesses, especially farmers, are headed into real financial difficulties now.
If you are making minimum wage in NY or San Fran, you shouldn’t be living in those cities unless you have roommates. No matter what you do, you cannot lower the housing costs of these cities (not the case with our suburbs).

Our minimum wage in my Canadian Province is over $17/hour and is going up in October! That's $12/hr USD. I can't believe their minimum wage is still under $10/hr USD!

Why have a national minimum wage without indexing it to the cost of living in particular areas? This could easily be indexed by zip code and would make far more sense. The numbers are readily available.

In Canada, the Federal minimum is $17.75/hr and the Provinces vary a bit. Ontario is $17.20.
